Ray, a former Evangelical Protestant and Bible teacher, goes through the Scriptures and the first five centuries of the Church to demonstrate that the early Christians had a clear understanding of the primacy of Peter in the see of Rome. He tackles the tough issues in an attempt to expose how the opposition is misunderstanding the Scriptures and history. He uses many Protestant scholars and historians to support the Catholic position. This book contains the most complete compilation of Scriptural and Patristic quotations on the primacy of Peter and the Papal office of any book available. It has over 500 footnotes with supporting evidence from Catholic, Orthodox, Evangelical, and non-Christian authorities.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book defends Catholic teaching against the opposition, using current Church teaching on the Old Testament foundation for the primacy and succession of Peter. A rich documentation, a fine study."
-Cardinal Christoph Schönborn

"A veritable tour de force on behalf of the Petrine ministry, bringing together exegetes, the Fathers of the Church, the witness of history, and even Protestant scholars. The work is scholarly, objective, and accessible to all readers. Recommended wholeheartedly and unequivocally."
- Fr. Peter Stravinskas

Excellent book
The book is very informative and researched. Ray did not hold back on the quality of the book either. The book has over 300 pages yet weights more than a larger book that holds 600 pages. I see people in the other reviews and i have to say they have not finished reading the book. It’s evident because the same arguments they use are the same arguments refuted in the book. Theyll say no Christian denies Peter died in Rome, yet Ray provides authors that deny this. I myself have heard this argument. That Church fathers would say the rock was Peter confession, yet all still agreed the rock was Peter as well. Not stuck in either or. But both meanings can be applied. The CCC also confirms this. Read the book people.

This book "Upon This Rock" is a must read for all Christians! It has writings from Jesus' Apostles and their disciples, the original preserved writings from the time of The Ascension of our Lord through the first 5 centuries of Christianity, which was the Catholic Church, "The One True Church", before there was even a bible. My dearly beloved Protestant friends, as Fr. Arnold Damen says, "You have read a great deal against the Catholic Church, now read something if favor or it. You can never pass an impartial sentence if you do not hear both sides of the question."

Father Arnold Damen said, "If the Catholic Church has been once the true Church of God, as is admitted by all, then she is the true Church yet, and shall be the true Church of God until the end of time, for Christ has promised that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church. He says that He has built it upon a rock, and that the gates of hell shall never prevail against it".

"Now, my dear people, if the Catholic Church has fallen into error, then the gates of hell have prevailed against her; and, if the gates of hell have prevailed against her, then Christ has not kept His promise, then He has deceived us, and if He has deceived us, then He is an imposter! If He be an imposter, then He is not God, and if He be not God, then all Christianity is a cheat and an imposition".

If you read this book, whether you are a Catholic, Protestant, or someone just wanting to learn about the history of Christianity, this book will blow you away! You cannot dispute the documented history and the overwhelming evidence and actual writings that Stephen Ray has put together for all of us to learn what Jesus commanded regarding His Church. May God Bless you all!

I have read numerous books in the past supporting Peter as the Bishop of Rome. I can tell you from great experience that this book is the best. It gives many arguments for and against that include Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox views. The book examines Bible verses along with foot notes providing support from external sources. This is a very easy to read and very informative book. It really focuses on a verse by verse dissection of the support of whey Peter is the one in charge of the Apostles using sources from Church Fathers, Protestant, and Jewish theologians. Highly recommend if you want an undisputed detailed and factual book supporting the Bishop of Rome.

If you are a Catholic, you need to read this book. If you are a Protestant, you need to read this book.

The author, a former Protestant whose love of truth and historical accuracy compelled him to embrace true Christianity, The Catholic Church. Ray explains the foundational historical facts upon which the primacy of Rome stakes its claim, and addresses the multitude of challenges to that claim.

Authoritative with copious notes and references, the book as a reference, is a must. It's also an easy read.

And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my [CATHOLIC} church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Overwhelming evidence that Jesus MEANT EXACTLY what he said - he built his Church on Peter and His Apostles with Peter, and his Office, as Chief Steward of ALL CHRISTIANS - who were ALL CATHOLIC for 15 centuries.

Short but great exposure of that apparent willing-tool of Satan, FUNDAMENTALIST LORAINE BOETTNER, author of Roman Catholicism, a work which completely MIS-represents, with malice and intent aforethought, the overwhelming evidence of early Scripture, The Catholic Church, church fathers and historical evidence. This evidence clearly identifies the Catholic Church as one, true, Holy communal and universal Church created by Jesus on his Apostles, which Boettner calls mere "legend." Ray's work exposes this audacious and provable fundamentalist Lie.

This is an excellent book for anyone stuck at the fork in the road of conversion. One way facing east, the other facing west. This book presents a coherent and easily readable breakdown of the historical and biblical basis for the primacy of Rome, providing ample evidence from Jewish, Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox sources, including many prominent early church fathers (both east and west). The evidence is truly overwhelming to the point where you're left with two options: allow history to speak for itself, or remain in willful ignorance.

This book is a great biblical and historical study that shows without a doubt that it was the unanimous consent of the fathers that the bishop of Rome had a primacy, not only in honor, but in authority as well from the very early days. This is the book for you if you are struggling with some Catholic vs. Orthodoxy questions, as it goes to show that office of the papacy was not only Biblically founded, but that is grew organically out of the early Church.

I kept reading the book expecting it to get better. Generally weak arguments. Not much of an apology. Much more suited for some one who wants an explanation of Catholic doctrine instead of a convincing argument.

The author expects the reader to draw the same conclusions he does based on the examples provided instead of spending the time to delineate.
