I am so excited about this project today! It has been on the “bucket” list of home projects for a while. As soon as we finished staining our Staircase Banister, I already knew our next home project would be installing a Barn Door in our Master Bedroom. Unfortunately, projects never move as quickly as I want them too. I know many of you understand that…but we finally got ‘er done…and I LOVE how it turned out.
I have dreamed of putting a barn door in our house for a few years now. We have only one spot in our entire house that would work for a barn door in our Master Bedroom. If you were following along with us last December, you might remember that we ripped out a wall in our Master Bedroom and joined our Master with a small adjoining room. We will be sharing that here soon.
For the Barn Door, we debated about building one or using a door that was already built. Due to a busy family schedule with the kids starting school and their after school sports activities and games, we opted to go with an existing door. We knew we would have to add a little height to the door to make it fit with the hardware and to be large enough to cover the space.
So, we went junking to one of our local “junking stores” and dug through A LOT of old doors to find one that was the right size and the style that we wanted.
We found one that was going to work perfectly. It was little shorter than we needed it to be so we simply added some length to the door. We added the length by taking a 2 x 4 and cutting it down in width and length so that it added the right amount of height to our door and was the same thickness as the original door.
Then we used a Biscuit Plate Joiner to cut out a slot in the two boards so that the slots line up when the boards are placed back together. The two boards are then aligned and glued together using a small oval piece of wood (aka a biscuit). This allows a nice sturdy joint and gives some strength to the two boards you are joining together.
Then we clamped the wood pieces together so that the glue would dry straight and in the proper position.
Then we filled in some dents and the holes, left from the previous hardware, with wood putty. When the putty dried, we sanded the door until it was nice and smooth.
Then we primed and painted the door a nice crisp white in a Satin finish.
The Barn Door hardware we used is from National Hardware. We were given this interior sliding door hardware system, from National Hardware in the rustic finish (Oil Rubbed Bronze), to review.
I have been so happy with the hardware. It was really easy to install and the door slides so smoothly back and forth across the track. I love how simple and straight the lines are and the rustic finish goes nicely with our Master Bedroom.
One of the last things I plan on doing in here before sharing the full reveal, is to replace these shaky old fans that were here when we moved in 12 years ago. I am still looking for just the right lights to replace them with!

Can you use any door? Are there door guides on the floor to keep the bottom of the door from banging on your trim? Did you have to mount it on the white trim to keep it from far enough away from the door trim?
The way the hardware mounts holds it away from the wall. We used the same width of board for the track as we did the door frame. There is no track on the bottom but it slides back and forth easily. You can use any door but you need to make sure it has the right height and width to match your door frame. You need a door at least 1 inch wider on each side of the door opening and enough height for the door to hang properly. We were going to build a door until we found one that would fit with a little bit of height added to it.
I have an absolute barn door envy right now. I’ve been dreaming to get one for our house AND the only place that would best fit a barn door at home is in my master bedroom too.

Barn door looks cute. We have the EXACT same lanterns by the fireplace. A 6×10 candle looks great to fill up the largest lantern. Do you plan to do anything with the brass on your fireplace? We painted ours black but didn’t know if you have alternate ideas.
Great tip on the candle! We have gone back and forth about that. The hubby doesn’t mind the brass…I don’t love it. Ultimately if I re-did it, I would just do all black for lack of other ideas as well :)

I love the idea but…how do you shut the door from inside the bathroom? A handle on the backside of the door would interfere with closing it at best, or scratch the wall and paint on the worst. How did you solve this problem?
Sue- You can install a flush handle on the other side if you want to. Hope this helps.
