Research Imaging Institute

Our mission is to develop non-invasive biomedical imaging and measurement methods for use in basic, clinical and translational research to decipher the structure and function of living organisms. Neuroscience research is given the highest priority.

Solving the Mysteries of the Mind

The Research Imaging Institute (RII) focuses on solving the mysteries of the mind. We are a research resource, promoting collaborative projects that cross departmental and institutional boundaries.

All imaging studies must be reviewed and approved by our Utilization Review Committee (URC). The URC monitors the use of RII imaging equipment and helps investigators optimize their imaging protocols to efficiently achieve the goals of their studies.  Click here to find out how to collaborate with us!

The award is named after Armand J. Guarino, Ph.D, who was the founding Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) from 1972 to 1986. The Guarino Award is the highest student recognition given by the Graduate School.

RII Structure

The RII is an Organized Research Unit of UT Health San Antonio, independently administered as a departmental equivalent and reporting to the Long School of Medicine.  We are located in the McDermott Clinical Sciences Building on the Greehey Academic & Research Campus, providing office space, laboratory space and administrative support to all RII researchers.

History of the RII

The RII was created in 1991 with authorization from the University of Texas Board of Regents, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and the Texas State Legislature. Facilities funding was provided from a variety of philanthropic sources, with the Ross Perot Foundation making the largest donation ($10 million).

The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense jointly contributed funds for instrumentation. Operating funds were provided by a Special Project appropriation from the Texas State Legislature. After a successful performance review by the THECB, the RII was a made a permanent component of the UT Health San Antonio budget in 1996.
