Abstract: This meta-analysis examines the effect of employment protection legislation on the unemployment and employment level. Based on the results of 72, respectively 42, studies, that analyze this topic, I find no statistically significant effect on the unemployment level and a slightly negative effect on the employment level. A separate regression for 13 studies yields that stricter employment protection legislation increases the unemployment level by 0.62 to 0.64 percentage points. Quality differences between the studies that exploit cross-country variation in order to identify the effect of employment protection legislation, lead to general doubts about the results of these studies.
