Abstract: We examine the Swiss patent portfolio in an international comparison, aggregated at industry and technology level, the knowledge diffusion across countries, industries, firms and their technologically relevant environment (knowledge spillover) and, finally, the effect on the innovation performance of Swiss firms. Following South Korea, Switzerland has the second largest number of patent applications per Mio. inhabitants. With respect to the average technological value of the patent applications, Switzerland ranks in the middle. International collaborations and external knowledge are of large importance for the innovation performance. Adequate policy measures shall be targeted at the improvement of absorptive capacity by supporting R&D activities and enhancing human capital. In addition, they shall try to ease contacts to other firms and universities and support integration into international research networks.
