Abstract:
During the last 20 years Austria developed from a country with below-average R&D intensity into one of the leading European countries in research and development. The article shows that affiliates of foreign multinational enterprises played a pivotal role in Austria's catching up. Moreover, my contribution discusses various positive and negative effects from the presence of foreign-owned firms for the Austrian innovation system.
