QoE QoS Mapping for YouTube Services over LTE Network

Published: 13 November 2016 Publication History

Abstract

The fourth generation of mobile networks, known as Long Term Evolution (LTE), is the first 3GPP cellular fully-IP standard. Quality of Service (QoS) policies are based on bearers and QoS Class Identifier (QCI). Here we focus on Quality of Experience (QoE) for a popular service, YouTube, which also constitutes a common experience for a billion users worldwide. We choose to measure QoE via the Apdex, in order to combine the response times for both HTTP web browsing and HTTP video streaming. Two different classes have been analyzed: MNO-managed and OTT-managed. Different scenarios are simulated using the OPNET simulation software. We derived a quite good linear model which links Apdex and the three KPIs for QoS. The model exhibits fairly good statistical metrics and holds for both the classes. This is a substantial progress with respect to previous work, according to which the MLR technique gave unsatisfactory results for the OTT-managed class.
