Exposée à un climat de montagne, elle est drainée par la rivière de Quérigut, le ruisseau d'Artigues et par divers autres petits cours d'eau. La commune possède un patrimoine naturel remarquable : trois sites Natura 2000 (le site « Quérigut, Orlu », la « haute Vallée de l'Aude et Bassin de l'Aiguette » et « Quérigut, Laurenti, Rabassolles, Balbonne, la Bruyante, haute vallée de l'Oriège ») et quatre zones naturelles d'intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique.
