The Spanish CMS Analysis Facility at CIEMAT / Cárdenas-Montes, M (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Peris, A Delgado (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Flix, J (Madrid, CIEMAT ; Barcelona, IFAE) ; Hernández, J M (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Holgado, J León (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Pérez, C Morcillo (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Yzquierdo, A Pérez-Calero (Madrid, CIEMAT ; Barcelona, IFAE) ; Calonge, F J Rodríguez (Madrid, CIEMAT) /CMS Collaboration
The increasingly larger data volumes that the LHC experiments will accumulate in the coming years, especially in the High-Luminosity LHC era, call for a paradigm shift in the way experimental datasets are accessed and analyzed. The current model, based on data reduction on the Grid infrastructure, followed by interactive data analysis of manageable size samples on the physicists’ individual computers, will be superseded by the adoption of Analysis Facilities. The CMS experiment is working to integrate an increasing number of High Performance Computing (HPC) resources into its distributed computing infrastructure. The case of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is particularly challenging as severe network restrictions prevent the use of CMS standard computing solutions. [...]

There is a general trend in WLCG towards the federation of resources, aiming for increased simplicity, efficiency, flexibility, and availability. Although general VO-agnostic federation of resources between two independent and autonomous resource centres may prove arduous, a considerable amount of flexibility in resource sharing can be achieved in the context of a single WLCG VO, with a relatively simple approach. This paper summarizes the operational experience of the Tier1 computer center at Port d’Informació Científica (PIC) supporting the commissioning and first run (Run1) of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The evolution of the experiment computing models resulting from the higher amounts of data expected after the restart of the LHC are also described..

Exploitation of network-segregated CPU resources in CMS / Acosta-Silva, C (BIST, Barcelona ; PIC, Bellaterra) ; Peris, A Delgado (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Flix, J (PIC, Bellaterra ; Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Frey, J (Wisconsin U., Madison) ; Hernández, J M (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Pérez-Calero Yzquierdo, A (PIC, Bellaterra ; Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Tannenbaum, T (Wisconsin U., Madison) /CMS Collaboration
CMS is tackling the exploitation of CPU resources at HPC centers where compute nodes do not have network connectivity to the Internet. Pilot agents and payload jobs need to interact with external services from the compute nodes access to the application software (cmvfs) and conditions data (Frontier), management of input and output data files (data management services), and job management (HTCondor). The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments will collect unprecedented data volumes in the next Physics run, with high pile-up collisions resulting in events that require a complex processing. Hence, the collaborations have been required to update their Computing Models to optimize the use of the available resources and control the growth of resources, in the midst of widespread funding restrictions, without penalizing any of the Physics objectives. Role of Tier-0, Tier-1 and Tier-2 Regional Centers in CMS DC04 / Barrass, T (Bristol U.) ; Metson, S (Bristol U.) ; Andreeva, J (CERN) ; Jank, W (CERN) ; Sinanis, N (CERN) ; Colino, N (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; García-Abia, P (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Hernández, J M (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Rodríguez-Calonge, F J (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Ernst, M (DESY) et al.
The CMS 2004 Data Challenge (DC04) was devised to test several key aspects of the CMS Computing Model in three ways: by trying to sustain a 25 Hz reconstruction rate at the Tier-0; by distributing the reconstructed data to six Tier-1 Regional Centers (CNAF in Italy, FNAL in US, GridKA in Germany, IN2P3 in France, PIC in Spain, RAL in UK) and handling catalogue issues; by redistributing data to Tier-2 centers for analysis. Simulated events, up to the digitization step, were produced prior to the DC as input for the reconstruction in the Pre-Challenge Production (PCP04). [...]

Several scientific fields, including Astrophysics, Astroparticle Physics, Cosmology, Nuclear and Particle Physics, and Research with Photons, are estimating that by the 2020 decade they will require data handling systems with data volumes approaching the Zettabyte distributed amongst as many as 10(18) individually addressable data objects (Zettabyte-Exascale systems). It may be convenient or necessary to deploy such systems using multiple physical sites [...]
