The micro-Resitive WELL (μ-RWELL) is a Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) that inherits some of the best characteristics of existing MPGDs, like GEMs and MicroMegas, while simplifying the detector construction. A significant progress towards large-scale applications has been achieved through the consolidation and industrial cost-effective manufacturing of this technology. [...]

The micro-RWELL detector for the phase-2 upgrade of the LHCb muon system / Bencivenni, G (Frascati) ; De Oliveira, R (CERN) ; Felici, G (Frascati) ; Gatta, M (Frascati) ; Giovannetti, M (Frascati ; INFN, Rome2) ; Morello, G (Frascati) ; Poli Lener, M (Frascati)
The micro-RWELL detector (μ-RWELL) is a single amplification stage resistive Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD), based on a copper-clad polyimide foil patterned with a micro-well matrix coupled with the readout PCB through a DLC resistive film (10÷100MΩ/□). For the phase-2 upgrade of the LHCb experiment, proposed for the LHC Run-5, the excellent performance of the current muon detector will need to be maintained at 40 times the pile-up level experienced during Run-2. The μ-RWELL detector / Bencivenni, G (Frascati) ; Benussi, L (Frascati) ; Borgonovi, L (INFN, Bologna) ; de Oliveira, R (CERN) ; De Simone, P (Frascati) ; Felici, G (Frascati) ; Gatta, M (Frascati) ; Giacomelli, P (INFN, Bologna) ; Morello, G (Frascati) ; Ochi, A (Kobe U.) et al.
The μ-RWELL has been conceived as a compact, simple and robust Micro-Pattern-Gaseous-Detector (MPGD) for very large area HEP applications requiring the operation in harsh environment. The detector amplification stage, similar to a GEM foil, is realized with a polyimide structure micro-patterned with a blind-hole matrix, embedded through a thin Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) resistive layer in the readout PCB. The μ-RWELL, a resistive Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detector with a single amplification stage, is crafted using a copper-clad polyimide foil intricately micro-patterned with a blind hole (well) matrix. This matrix is integrated into the readout Printed Circuit Board, complemented by a thin Diamond-Like-Carbon sputtered resistive film, in order to mitigate the transition from streamer to spark regimes, enabling the attainment of substantial gains (≥10$^{4}$).
