The nucleus of the radioisotope thorium-229 (${}^{229}$Th) features an isomer with an exceptionally low excitation energy that enables direct laser manipulation of nuclear states. For this reason, it is a leading candidate for use in next-generation optical clocks. [...]

Quadrupole Moments of $^{29}$Mg and $^{33}$Mg

The quadrupole moments of 29Mg and 33Mg have been constrained by collinear laser spectroscopy at CERN-ISOLDE. The values are consistent with shell-model predictions, thus supporting the current understanding of light nuclei associated with the "island of inversion"..

A setup for vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy of the $^{229}$Th low-energy isomer
/ Kraemer, Sandro (KU Leuven ; LMU, Garching) ; Chhetri, Premaditya (KU Leuven) ; Bara, Silvia (KU Leuven) ; Claessens, Arno (KU Leuven) ; De Witte, Hilde (KU Leuven) ; Elskens, Yens (KU Leuven) ; Ferrer, Rafael (KU Leuven) ; Kudryavtsev, Yuri (KU Leuven) ; Sels, Simon (KU Leuven) ; Van Den Bergh, Paul (KU Leuven) et al.
The ground-state transition of the low-energy isomer in $^{229}$Th has been proposed as the basis for the development of a novel optical clock as a tool for fundamental-physics studies. Vacuum-ultraviolet studies of the 𝛽-decay of 229Ac recently enabled to measure the de-excitation energy of the isomer with a sevenfold improvement in precision compared to previous results by directly observing photons from the isomer’s radiative decay. Measurement and microscopic description of odd-even staggering of charge radii of exotic copper isotopes
/ de Groote, R.P. (Leuven U. ; Jyvaskyla U.) ; Billowes, J. (Manchester U.) ; Binnersley, C.L. (Manchester U.) ; Bissell, M.L. (Manchester U.) ; Cocolios, T.E. (Leuven U.) ; Day Goodacre, T. The mesoscopic nature of the atomic nucleus gives rise to a wide array of macroscopic and microscopic phenomena. The size of the nucleus is a window into this duality: while the charge radii globally scale as $A^{1/3}$, their evolution across isotopic chains reveals unanticipated structural phenomena [1-3].
