Preliminary Design of a Cooling System for the LHC Injection Kicker Magnets / Vega Cid, Lorena (CERN) ; Abánades, Alberto (Madrid, Polytechnic U.) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Moester, Max (CERN) ; Vlachodimitropoulos, Vasileios (CERN) ; Weterings, Wim (CERN)
The CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is equipped with two fast pulsed magnet systems (MKIs) that inject particle beams from the injector chain. Future operation for High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) with high intensity beams will cause heating of the ferrite yokes of the MKIs beyond their Curie temperature, preventing injection until the yokes cool down. Conception and design of a cooling system for the LHC injection kicker magnets / Vega Cid, L (CERN ; Madrid, Polytechnic U.) ; Abánades, A (Madrid, Polytechnic U.) ; Barnes, M J (CERN) ; Mostchmann, F (CERN) ; Vlachodimitropoulos, V (CERN) ; Weterings, W (CERN)
The CERN Large Hadron Collider is equipped with two fast single-turn injection kicker systems that deflect the incoming particle beam onto the accelerator’s orbit. The high intensity LHC beam, circulating for many hours, can cause considerable heating of the injection kicker magnets. [...]

Thermal analysis of the LHC injection kicker magnets / Vega, L (CERN) ; Abánades, A (Madrid Polytechnic U., ETS Architecture) ; Barnes, M J (CERN) ; Vlachodimitropoulos, V (CERN) ; Weterings, W (CERN)
The CERN Large Hadron Collider LHC is equipped with two fast pulsed magnet systems (MKIs) that inject particle beams coming from the injector chain. Operation with high intensity beams for many hours can lead to significant beam induced heating of the ferrite yokes of the MKIs. [...]

Hydrogen production via methane pyrolysis in a liquid metal bubble column reactor with a packed bed / Geißler, T (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Abánades, A (Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam ; Madrid, Polytechnic U.) ; Heinzel, A (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Mehravaran, K (Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam) ; Müller, G (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Rathnam, R K (Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam) ; Rubbia, C (Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam ; CERN) ; Salmieri, D (CERN ; Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam) ; Stoppel, L (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Stückrad, S (Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam) et al.
Methane pyrolysis experiments using a quartz glass-steel bubble column reactor filled with liquid tin and cylindrical quartz glass rings serving as a packed bed were conducted at various liquid metal temperature levels in the range of 930–1175 °C. Besides the liquid metal temperature, special attention was paid to the influence of the feed gas volume flow rate in the range of 50–200 mln/min and the inlet feed gas dilution with nitrogen. [...]

Results from the TARC experiment: spallation neutron phenomenology in lead and neutron-driven nuclear transmutation by adiabatic resonance crossing. / Abánades, A ; Aleixandre, J ; Andriamonje, Samuel A (CEA-Saclay) ; Angelopoulos, Angelos ; Apostolakis, Alcibiades J ; Arnould, H ; Belle, E ; Bompas, C A ; Brozzi, Delecurgo ; Bueno, J et al.
The results of the TARC experiment are summarized herewith, whose main purpose is to demonstrate the possibility of using Adiabatic Resonance Crossing (ARC) to destroy efficiently Long-Lived Fission Fragments (LLFFs) in accelerator-driven systems and to validate a new simulation developed in the framework of the Energy Amplifier programme. An experimental set-up was installed in a CERN PS proton beam line to study how neutrons, produced by spallation at relatively high energy (En * 1 MeV), slow down quasi adiabatically, with almost flat isolethargic energy distribution and reach the capture resonance energy of an element to be transmuted where they will have a high probability of being captured. Experimental Verification of Neutron Phenomenology in Lead and Transmutation by Adiabatic Resonance Crossing in Accelerator Driven Systems: a Short Summary / Abánades, A ; Aleixandre, J ; Andriamonje, Samuel A (CEA-Saclay) ; Angelopoulos, Angelos ; Apostolakis, Alcibiades J ; Arnould, H ; Belle, E ; Bompas, C A ; Brozzi, Delecurgo ; Bueno, J et al.
The Transmutation by Adiabatic Resonance Crossing (TARC) experiment was carried out as PS211 at the CERN PS from 1996 to 1999. Energy and space distributions of spallation neutrons (from 2.5 and 3.57 GeV/c CERN proton beams) slowing down in a 3.3x3.3x3 m3 lead volume and neutron capture rates on long-lived fission fragements 99Tc and 129I demonstrate that Adiabatic Resonance Crossing (ARC) can be used to eliminate efficiently such nuclear waste and validate innovative simulation..

Preliminary design studies for a 100 MW Energy Amplifier prototype / Abánades, A ; Pérez-Navarro, A
The Energy Amplifier (EA) is a new concept of fission system based on a subcritical assembly sustained with the neutrons generated by proton beam impact on a heavy element (spallation). This concept, proposed by the Nobel Laureate C. [...]
