Simulations of a cryogenic, buffer-gas filled Paul trap for low-emittance ion bunches / Lechner, S (CERN ; Vienna, Tech. U. ; McGill U.) ; Sels, S (CERN) ; Belosevic, I (TRIUMF) ; Buchinger, F (McGill U.) ; Fischer, P (Greifswald U.) ; Kanitz, C (Erlangen - Nuremberg U.) ; Lagaki, V (CERN ; Greifswald U.) ; Maier, F M (CERN ; Greifswald U.) ; Plattner, P (CERN ; Innsbruck U.) ; Schweikhard, L (Greifswald U.) et al.
Many experiments with pulsed ion beams benefit from or even require ion bunches with both small temporal width as well as small energy spread. To achieve optimal ion-beam preparation, a buffer-gas filled cryogenic Paul trap is being developed in the context of the Multi Ion Reflection Apparatus for Collinear Laser Spectroscopy (MIRACLS). Collinear laser spectroscopy measurements were performed on $^{68-74}$Ge isotopes ($Z = 32$) at ISOLDE-CERN, by probing the $4s^2 4p^2 \, ^3\!P_1 \rightarrow 4s^2 4p 5s \, ^3\!P_1^o$ atomic transition (269~nm) of germanium. Nuclear charge radii are determined via the measured isotope shifts, revealing a larger local variation than the neighboring isotopic chains. [...]

A setup for vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy of the $^{229}$Th low-energy isomer / Kraemer, Sandro (KU Leuven ; LMU, Garching) ; Chhetri, Premaditya (KU Leuven) ; Bara, Silvia (KU Leuven) ; Claessens, Arno (KU Leuven) ; De Witte, Hilde (KU Leuven) ; Elskens, Yens (KU Leuven) ; Ferrer, Rafael (KU Leuven) ; Kudryavtsev, Yuri (KU Leuven) ; Sels, Simon (KU Leuven) ; Van Den Bergh, Paul (KU Leuven) et al.
The ground-state transition of the low-energy isomer in $^{229}$Th has been proposed as the basis for the development of a novel optical clock as a tool for fundamental-physics studies. Vacuum-ultraviolet studies of the 𝛽-decay of 229Ac recently enabled to measure the de-excitation energy of the isomer with a sevenfold improvement in precision compared to previous results by directly observing photons from the isomer’s radiative decay. The changes in mean-squared charge radii of neutron-deficient gold nuclei have been determined using the in-source, resonance-ionization laser spectroscopy technique, at the ISOLDE facility (CERN). From these new data, nuclear deformations are inferred, revealing a competition between deformed and spherical configurations. [...]

The Multi Ion Reflection Apparatus for Collinear Laser Spectroscopy (MIRACLS) seeks to extend the reach of high-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy (CLS) to more exotic radionuclides. In this novel technique, ion bunches of short-lived radioisotopes are trapped between two electrostatic mirrors of a Multi-Reflection Time-of-Flight (MR-ToF) device at 30-keV kinetic energy. [...]

Doppler and sympathetic cooling for the investigation of short-lived radioactive ions / Sels, S (CERN ; Leuven U.) ; Maier, F M (CERN ; Greifswald U.) ; Au, M (CERN ; Mainz U.) ; Fischer, P (Greifswald U.) ; Kanitz, C (CERN) ; Lagaki, V (CERN ; Greifswald U.) ; Lechner, S (CERN ; TU Vienna) ; Leistenschneider, E (CERN) ; Leimbach, D (CERN ; Mainz U., Inst. Phys. ; U. Gothenburg (main)) ; Lykiardopoulou, E M (British Columbia U. ; TRIUMF) et al.
At radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities, ions of short-lived radionuclides are cooled and bunched in buffergas-filled Paul traps to improve the ion-beam quality for subsequent experiments. To deliver even colder ions, beneficial to RIB experiments’ sensitivity or accuracy, we employ Doppler and sympathetic cooling in a Paul trap cooler-buncher. [...]

The nucleus of the radioisotope thorium-229 (${}^{229}$Th) features an isomer with an exceptionally low excitation energy that enables direct laser manipulation of nuclear states. For this reason, it is a leading candidate for use in next-generation optical clocks. [...]

The Multi-Ion Reflection Apparatus for Collinear Laser Spectroscopy (MIRACLS), currently under development at ISOLDE/CERN, aims to combine the high resolution of fluorescence-based collinear laser spectroscopy (CLS) with a high sensitivity. This will be achieved by confining 30-keV ion bunches in a Multi-Reflection Time-of-Flight (MR-ToF) device which allows laser spectroscopic probing for several thousand times. [...]
