Tests of General Relativity with GWTC-3 / LIGO Scientific Collaboration
The ever-increasing number of detections of gravitational waves (GWs) from compact binaries by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors allows us to perform ever-more sensitive tests of general relativity (GR) in the dynamical and strong-field regime of gravity. [...]

Search for Subsolar-Mass Binaries in the First Half of Advanced LIGO’s and Advanced Virgo’s Third Observing Run / LIGO Scientific Collaboration
We report on a search for compact binary coalescences where at least one binary component has a mass between 0.2 $M_\odot$ and 1.0 $M_\odot$ in Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo data collected between 1 April 2019 1500 UTC and 1 October 2019 1500 UTC. We extend previous analyses in two main ways: we include data from the Virgo detector and we allow for more unequal mass systems, with mass ratio $q \geq 0.1$. [...]

First joint observation by the underground gravitational-wave detector KAGRA with GEO 600 / KAGRA Collaboration
We report the results of the first joint observation of the KAGRA detector with GEO600. KAGRA is a cryogenic and underground gravitational-wave detector consisting of a laser interferometer with three-kilometer arms, and located in Kamioka, Gifu, Japan. [...]

Since a couple of years, a team at CERN and partners from the Citizen Cyberscience Centre (CCC) have been working on a project that enables general physics simulation programs to run in a virtual machine on volunteer PCs around the world. The project uses the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) framework. [...]

Enabling data-intensive science with Tactical Storage Systems / Thain, Douglas (speaker) (Computer Science and Engineering Dept., Notre-Dame Univ.) ; Marquina, Miguel Angel (organiser)
Large scale scientific computing requires the ability to share and consume data and storage in complex ways across multiple systems. However, conventional systems constrain users to the fixed abstractions selected by the local system administrator. [...]

Einstein@Home is a project developed to search data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) in the US and from the GEO 600 gravitational wave observatory in Germany for signals coming from extremely dense, rapidly rotating stars. Such sources are believed to be either quark stars or neutron stars, and a subclass of these are already observed by conventional means as pulsars or X-ray emitting celestial objects. [...]

Data Logistics in Network Computing / Swany, Martin (speaker) (Deptof Computer and Information Sciences/U.Delaware) ; Marquina, Miguel Angel (organiser)
In distributed computing environments, performance is often dominated by the time that it takes to move data over a network. In the case of data-centric applications, or Data Grids, this problem of data movement becomes one of the overriding concerns. [...]

A peek into the world of chip design / Beutler, Bob (speaker) (Intel until Oct. 2002) ; Marquina, Miguel Angel (organiser)
This lecture will give some insight into how the Microprocessor Design Group approaches the daunting task of the design of a lead microprocessor as complex as the Pentium IV while under very specific schedule constraints. For a historical perspective, we will start with a quick comparison of the complexity/performance of the Willamette and Prescott (Pentium IV) class of microprocessor with the generations before the Pentium IV (Bob was a member of the design teams for a number of lead microprocessor projects including the 486DX2, Pentium Pr
