Beam impact experiment of 440 GeV/p protons on superconducting wires and tapes in a cryogenic environment / Will, Andreas (KIT, Karlsruhe ; CERN) ; Bastian, Yan (CERN) ; Bernhard, Axel (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Bonura, Marco (U. Geneva (main)) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Favre, Mathieu (CERN) ; Lindstrom, Bjorn (CERN) ; Mentink, Matthijs (CERN) ; Monteuuis, Arnaud (CERN) et al.
The superconducting magnets used in high energy particle accelerators such as CERN’s LHC can be impacted by the circulating beam in case of specific failure cases. This leads to interaction of the beam particles with the magnet components, like the superconducting coils, directly or via secondary particle showers. [...]

Impact of Superconducting Magnet Protection Equipment on the Circulating Beam in HL-LHC / Valette, Matthieu (CERN) ; Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Fernandez Navarro, Alejandro (CERN) ; Lindstrom, Bjorn (CERN) ; Mentink, Matthijs (CERN) ; Ravaioli, Emmanuele (CERN) ; Schmidt, Ruediger (CERN) ; Stubberud, Edvard (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN)
The new superconducting quadrupole and dipole magnets for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will rely on quench heaters or Coupling-Loss Induced Quench (CLIQ) units or a combination of both to protect the magnet coils in case of a quench. After the detection of a quench, the quench heater power supplies will discharge currents of several hundreds of amperes into the quench heater strips glued to the coils, and the CLIQ units will discharge an oscillating current in the order of 1~kA directly into the coils. Change of Critical Current Density in Nb-Ti and Nb$_{3}$Sn Strands After Millisecond Heating / Raginel, Vivien (CERN) ; Kleiven, David (Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Kulesz, Karolina (CERN) ; Mentink, Matthijs (CERN) ; Schmidt, Ruediger (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN)
The damage mechanisms and limits of superconducting magnet components due to direct beam impact are not well understood. The energy deposition from beam losses can cause significant temperature rise and mechanical stress in the magnet coils, which can lead to a degradation of the insulation strength and critical current of the superconductor.
