The paper provides an overview of the radiation protection challenges and the advanced simulation techniques used to study and plan complex interventions in radiation areas at CERN, particularly with regard to the Large Hadron Collider. The operational radiation protection aspects are supported by state of the art simulations by means of the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and estimates obtained via several tools, used within the CERN Radiation Protection group, such as ActiWiz, SESAME, and the Fluence Conversion Coefficients (FCC) method which extend the built-in FLUKA capabilities. Initiated through the Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) Study Group there is a strong interest from the scientific community to exploit the full intensity potential of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN for Fixed Target physics experiments before the end of this decade. With the ECN3 cavern in the North Area (NA) identified as a suitable candidate location for a future high-intensity experimental facility compatible with a large variety of experiments, the new PBC ECN3 Beam Delivery Task Force was mandated to assess the feasibility of delivering a slow extracted beam of up to 4x10^19 protons per year at 400 GeV. During the last Long Shutdown, a scheduled maintenance period between physics runs, the two Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam dumps were replaced with upgraded spares modules. It was then decided to conduct an in-house autopsy and a post-irradiation examination of the removed dumps to extract information essential for the 3rd LHC physics run and to aid the design of new generations of beam dumps able to cope with future upgrades of the LHC.
