In order to elucidate the microscopic mechanism for the earlier observed enhanced stability of deuterated amorphous silicon solar cells we conducted a side by-side study of fully deuterated intrinsic layers on crystalline silicon substrates using the free-electron laser facility at Nieuwegein (FELIX) to resonantly excite the Si-D stretching vibration and measure the various relaxation channels available to these modes, and of p-i-n solar cells with identical intrinsic absorber layers on glass/TCO substrates to record the degradation and stabilization of solar cell parameters under prolonged light soaking treatments. From our comparative study it is shown that a-Si:D has a superior resistance against light-induced defect creation as compared to a-Si:H and that this can now be explained in the light of the 'H collision model' since the initial step in the process, the release of H, is more likely than that of D. Multi phonon emission in InAs quantum wells studied with a free electron laser and high pulsed magnetic fields / Bradley, I V ; Murzyn, P ; Murdin, B N ; Wells, J P R ; Clarke, D G ; Stradling, R A ; Pidgeon, C R
The short pulsed, tunable output from the Dutch free electron laser FELIX, coupled with a 45 T pulsed magnet has been used to measure the non-radiative decay rates between Landau levels in n-type InAs/GaSb quantum wells. The decay rate is 2 p/sup -1/ when the cyclotron resonance energy, E/sub CR/ = E/sub LO/ = 30 meV, and only slightly less, 0.8 ps/sup -1/ when E/sub CR/ = 2E/sub LO/ when the principal relaxation pathway is the emission of multiple longitudinal optical (LO) phonons. Picosecond infrared studies of H$^{-}$ local modes in LaF$_{3}$ / Wells, J P R ; Jones, G D ; Bradley, I V ; Pidgeon, C R
Three-beam normalised pump-probe measurements for the Z-localised vibrational mode of H/sup -/ in LaF/sub 3/ yield a 10 K population decay time (T/sub 1/) of 49 ps. The temperature decrease of this T /sub 1/ time is fitted to two-phonon anharmonic decay together with one-phonon absorption to the 351 cm/sup -1/ higher (X, Y)-mode. [...]
