Heavy Flavor Kinematic Correlations in Cold Nuclear Matter / Vogt, Ramona (speaker) (LLNL)
It has been proposed that the azimuthal distributions of heavy flavor quark-antiquark pairs may be modified in the medium of a heavy-ion collision. This assumption was tested through next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations of the azimuthal distribution, $d\sigma/d\phi$, including transverse momentum broadening, employing $\langle k_T^2 \rangle$ and fragmentation in exclusive $Q \overline Q$ pair production [1]. The results have been compared to $p+p$ and $p + \overline p$ data on $Q \overline Q$ azimuthal correlations [1] as well as $b \overline b$ mass, pair $p_T$, rapidity, rapidity gap, $p_T$ asymmetry and azimuthal difference correlations in $p+p$ collisions through their decays to $J/\psi J/\psi$, as measured by LHCb [2]. Predictions for cold nuclear matter effects on charged hadrons, identified light hadrons, quarkonium and heavy flavor hadrons, Drell-Yan dileptons, jets, photons, gauge bosons and top quarks produced in $p+$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 8.16$ TeV are compiled and, where possible, compared to each other. Predictions of the normalized ratios of $p+$Pb to $p+p$ cross sections are also presented for most of the observables, providing new insights into the expected role of cold nuclear matter effects. This report reviews the study of open heavy-flavour and quarkonium production in high-energy hadronic collisions, as tools to investigate fundamental aspects of Quantum Chromodynamics, from the proton and nucleus structure at high energy to deconfinement and the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Emphasis is given to the lessons learnt from LHC Run 1 results, which are reviewed in a global picture with the results from SPS and RHIC at lower energies, as well as to the questions to be addressed in the future. Initial-state quark energy loss from Drell-Yan production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions / Wohri, H K (LIP, Lisbon ; CERN) ; Faccioli, P (LIP, Lisbon) ; Lourenco, C (CERN) ; Vogt, R (LLNL, Livermore ; UC, Davis)
Drell-Yan production cross sections were measured by the NA3 and E866 experiments, in p-Pt and pp collisions, as a function of the dimuon mass and x_F. We compare these measurements to next-to-leading order Drell-Yan calculations, made with the CT EQ6M parton densities modified (or not) by nuclear effects, using the EPS09 parameterization. [...]

We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to stongly-coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. J/$\psi$ production and absorption in p plus A and d plus Au collisions / Vogt, R (UC, Davis ; LLNL, Livermore) ; Wohri, H K (Lisbon, LIFEP ; CERN) ; Lourenco, C (CERN)
The level of ``anomalous{''} charmonium suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions and its interpretation as a signal of quark-gluon plasma formation requires a robust understanding of charmonium production and absorption in proton-nucleus collisions. In a previous study we have shown that, contrary to common belief, the so-called J/psi, ``absorption cross section{''}, sigma(J/psi)(ubs), is not a ``universal constant{''} but, rather, an effective parameter that depends very significantly on the charmonium rapidity and on the collision energy.
