The Forward Physics Facility at the High-Luminosity LHC
/ Feng, Jonathan L. (UC, Irvine) ; Kling, Felix (DESY) ; Reno, Mary Hall (Iowa U.) ; Rojo, Juan (NIKHEF, Amsterdam ; Vrije U., Amsterdam) ; Soldin, Dennis (Delaware U.) ; Anchordoqui, Luis A. High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) [...]

Robust Independent Validation of Experiment and Theory: Rivet version 3

London) ; Christensen, Christian Holm (Bohr Inst.) ; Corpe, Louie (Imperial Coll., London) ; Grellscheid, David (Bergen U.) ; Grosse-Oetringhaus, Jan Fiete (CERN) ; Gutschow, Christian (University Coll. First released in 2010, the Rivet library forms an important repository for analysis code, facilitating comparisons between measurements of the final state in particle collisions and theoretical calculations of those final states. We give an overview of Rivet's current design and implementation, its uptake for analysis preservation and physics results, and summarise recent developments including propagation of MC systematic-uncertainty weights, heavy-ion and $ep$ physics, and systems for detector emulation. A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig (version 7.2) is now available. This version introduces a number of improvements, notably: improvements to the simulation of multiple-parton interactions, including diffractive processes; a new model for baryonic colour re-connection; spin correlations in both the dipole and angular-ordered parton showers; improvements to strangeness production; an improved choice of evolution variable in the angular-ordered parton shower; support for generic Lorentz structures in BSM models..

Monte Carlo event generators for high energy particle physics event simulation

Monte Carlo event generators (MCEGs) are the indispensable workhorses of particle physics, bridging the gap between theoretical ideas and first-principles calculations on the one hand, and the complex detector signatures and data of the experimental community on the other hand. [...]

Parton Shower and Matching Uncertainties in Top Quark Pair Production with Herwig 7
/ Cormier, Kyle (Toronto U.) ; Plätzer, Simon (Vienna U.) ; Reuschle, Christian (Florida State U. ; Lund U., Dept. Theor. Phys.) ; Richardson, Peter (CERN ; Durham U., IPPP) ; Webster, Stephen (Durham U., IPPP)
We evaluate the theoretical uncertainties in next-to-leading order plus parton shower predictions for top quark pair production and decay in hadronic collisions. Our work is carried out using the Herwig 7 event generator and presents an in-depth study of variations in matching schemes with two systematically different shower algorithms, the traditional angular-ordered and alternative dipole shower.
