Phys.) ; Medvids, A (Riga Tech. U.) ; Onufrijevs, P (Riga Tech. U.) ; Valizadeh, R (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Sublet, A (CERN) ; Pira, C (INFN, Legnaro) et al.
Bulk niobium is currently the material of choice for superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities and is a well matured process. However, it is possible that SRF cavities could be further improved beyond bulk Nb by sputtering thin Nb films onto Cu cavities. [...]

Superconducting (SC) thin film coatings on Cu substrates are already widely used as an alternative to bulk Nb SRF structures. Using Cu allows improved thermal stability compared to Nb due to having a greater thermal conductivity. [...]

An international collaboration of research teams from CEA (France), CERN (Switzerland), INFN/LNL (Italy), HZB and USI (Germany), IEE (Slovakia), RTU (Latvia) and STFC/DL (UK), are working together on better understanding of how to improve the properties of superconducting thin films (ScTF) for RF cavities. The collaboration has been formed as WP15 in the H2020 ARIES project funded by EC. [...]

Thick Film Morphology and SC Characterizations of 6 GHz Nb/Cu Cavities
/ Garcia Diaz, Vanessa (INFN, Legnaro ; U. Ferrara (main)) ; Azzolini, Oscar (INFN, Legnaro) ; Chyhyrynets, Eduard (INFN, Legnaro) ; Fonnesu, Dorothea (CERN) ; Keppel, Giorgio (INFN, Legnaro) ; Kugeler, Oliver (Helmholtz-Zentrum, Berlin) ; Pira, Cristian (INFN, Legnaro) ; Stivanello, Fabrizio (INFN, Legnaro) ; Tikhonov, Dmitry (Helmholtz-Zentrum, Berlin) ; Valizadeh, Reza (Daresbury) et al.
Thick films deposited in long pulse DCMS mode onto 6 GHz copper cavities have demonstrated the mitigation of the Q-slope at low accelerating fields. The Nb thick films (~40 microns) show the possibility to reproduce the bulk niobium superconducting properties and morpholo-gy characterizations exhibited dense and void-free films that are encouraging for the scaling of the process to 1.3 GHz cavities. The production of superconducting coatings for radio frequency (RF) cavities has been developed over several decades. It is widely accepted that for any further improvement in cavity RF performance, innovation is needed and one may have to turn to other forms of Nb and other superconducting materials. [...]

Search for Majorana neutrinos exploiting millikelvin cryogenics with CUORE
/ CUORE Collaboration
The possibility that neutrinos may be their own antiparticles, unique among the known fundamental particles, arises from the symmetric theory of fermions proposed by Ettore Majorana in 1937. Given the profound consequences of such Majorana neutrinos, among which is a potential explanation for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis, the Majorana nature of neutrinos commands intense experimental scrutiny globally; one of the primary experimental probes is neutrinoless double beta ($0 \nu \beta \beta$) decay.
