Characterisation of a medium-size-area high-rate multi-layer boron-coated GEM detector for thermal neutrons
/ Cancelli, Stephanie (Milan Bicocca U. ; INFN, Milan Bicocca ; Bari U.) ; Muraro, Andrea (Bari U.) ; Murtas, Fabrizio (CERN ; Frascati) ; Cippo, Enrico Perelli (Bari U.) ; Altieri, Saverio (INFN, Pavia) ; Caruggi, Federico (Milan Bicocca U. ; INFN, Milan Bicocca) ; De Oliveira, Rui (CERN) ; Gorini, Giuseppe (Milan Bicocca U. ; INFN, Milan Bicocca ; Bari U.) ; Grosso, Giovanni (Bari U.) ; Lai, Chung-Chuan (ESS, Lund) et al.
During the last 10 years, the $^{3}$He crisis has brought to the development of new thermal neutron detection technologies and one of them is based on gas electron multiplier (GEM) principle. To detect neutrons, standard triple GEM detectors are usually coupled with a suitable converter, such as a $^{10}$B$_{4}$C, where neutrons are converted via the nuclear reaction $^{10}$B(n,$\alpha $)$^{7}$Li. Challenging neutron-capture cross-section measurements of small cross sections and samples with a very limited number of atoms require high-flux time-of-flight facilities. In turn, such facilities need innovative detection setups that are fast, have low sensitivity to neutrons, can quickly recover from the so-called $\gamma$-flash, and offer the highest possible detection sensitivity. Multi-section fission ionization chamber for measurement of 239Pu(n,γ) reaction in fission tagging method
/ Perkowski, J (Lodz U.) ; Alcayne, V (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Andrzejewski, J (Lodz U.) ; Cano-Ott, D (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Gawlik-Ramięga, A (Lodz U.) ; Mendoza, E (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Sánchez-Caballero, A (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Sibbens, G (Geel, JRC) ; Vanleeuw, D (Geel, JRC) ; Aberle, O (CERN) et al.
The 239Pu(n,γ) reaction cross section is very important for operation of both thermal and fast reactors, when loaded with MOX fuels. According to the NEA/OECD High Priority Request List the precision of cross section data for this reaction should be improved. [...]

Irradiation effects on GEM detectors operated at RUN1 and RUN2 at the LHCb experiment
/ Poli Lener, M (Frascati) ; Alfonsi, M (Mainz U., Inst. Phys.) ; Bencivenni, G (Frascati) ; Brundu, D (INFN, Cagliari) ; Cardini, A (INFN, Cagliari) ; De Simone, P (Frascati) ; Giovannetti, M (Frascati) ; Murtas, F (Frascati) ; Morello, G (Frascati) ; Pinci, D (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) et al.
Triple-GEM detectors with pad readout have been employed to equip the innermost region (R1) of the first station (M1) within the Muon system of the LHCb experiment. The GEM detectors have been operated with an Ar/CO2/CF4 = 45/15/40 gas mixture at a gas gain of about 4000 with an average particle flux of about 250 kHz/cm2. [...]

Hadron therapy is an advanced radiation modality for treating cancer, which currently uses protons and carbon ions. Hadrons allow for a highly conformal dose distribution to the tumour, minimising the detrimental side-effects due to radiation received by healthy tissues. [...]

Pushing the high count rate limits of scintillation detectors for challenging neutron-capture experiments

One of the critical aspects for the accurate determination of neutron capture cross sections when combining time-of-flight and total energy detector techniques is the characterization and control of systematic uncertainties associated to the measuring devices. In this work we explore the most conspicuous effects associated to harsh count rate conditions: dead-time and pile-up effects. [...]
