Characterisation of a medium-size-area high-rate multi-layer boron-coated GEM detector for thermal neutrons / Cancelli, Stephanie (Milan Bicocca U. ; INFN, Milan Bicocca ; Bari U.) ; Muraro, Andrea (Bari U.) ; Murtas, Fabrizio (CERN ; Frascati) ; Cippo, Enrico Perelli (Bari U.) ; Altieri, Saverio (INFN, Pavia) ; Caruggi, Federico (Milan Bicocca U. ; INFN, Milan Bicocca) ; De Oliveira, Rui (CERN) ; Gorini, Giuseppe (Milan Bicocca U. ; INFN, Milan Bicocca ; Bari U.) ; Grosso, Giovanni (Bari U.) ; Lai, Chung-Chuan (ESS, Lund) et al.
During the last 10 years, the $^{3}$He crisis has brought to the development of new thermal neutron detection technologies and one of them is based on gas electron multiplier (GEM) principle. To detect neutrons, standard triple GEM detectors are usually coupled with a suitable converter, such as a $^{10}$B$_{4}$C, where neutrons are converted via the nuclear reaction $^{10}$B(n,$\alpha $)$^{7}$Li. Challenging neutron-capture cross-section measurements of small cross sections and samples with a very limited number of atoms require high-flux time-of-flight facilities. In turn, such facilities need innovative detection setups that are fast, have low sensitivity to neutrons, can quickly recover from the so-called $\gamma$-flash, and offer the highest possible detection sensitivity. Measurement of the 160Gd(n, γ) cross section at n_TOF and its medical implications / n_TOF Collaboration
Neutron-capture reactions on gadolinium isotopes play an important role in several fields of physics, in particular in nuclear Astrophysics for the understanding of the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements (beyond iron) in stars via the s- and r-processes [1] and in nuclear technology. Another important application of gadolinium is linked to the production of terbium, that offers a set of clinically interesting isotopes for the ranostics, characterized by complementary physical decay characteristics. A segmented total energy detector (sTED) for (n, γ) cross section measurements at n_TOF EAR2 / n_TOF Collaboration
The neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF is characterised by its high instantaneous neutron intensity, high-resolution and broad neutron energy spectra, specially conceived for neutron-induced reaction cross section measurements. Two Time-Of-Flight (TOF) experimental areas are available at the facility: experimental area 1 (EAR1), located at the end of the 185 m horizontal flight path from the spallation target, and experimental area 2 (EAR2), placed at 20 m from the target in the vertical direction. First high resolution measurement of neutron capture resonances in 176Yb at the n_TOF CERN facility / n_TOF Collaboration
Several international agencies recommend the study of new routes and new facilities for producing radioisotopes with application to nuclear medicine. $^{177}$Lu is a versatile radioisotope used for therapy and diagnosis (theranostics) of cancer with good success in neuroendocrine tumours that is being studied to be applied to a wider range of tumours. Triple-GEM detectors with pad readout have been employed to equip the innermost region (R1) of the first station (M1) within the Muon system of the LHCb experiment. The GEM detectors have been operated with an Ar/CO2/CF4 = 45/15/40 gas mixture at a gas gain of about 4000 with an average particle flux of about 250 kHz/cm2. [...]

One of the critical aspects for the accurate determination of neutron capture cross sections when combining time-of-flight and total energy detector techniques is the characterization and control of systematic uncertainties associated to the measuring devices. In this work we explore the most conspicuous effects associated to harsh count rate conditions: dead-time and pile-up effects. [...]
