In this contribution to the Snowmass 2021 process we review theoretical developments in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with a focus on effects at the dimension-8 level and beyond. [...]

LHC limits on axion-like particles from heavy-ion collisions / Knapen, Simon (LBL, Berkeley ; UC, Berkeley) ; Lin, Tongyan (UC, San Diego ; LBL, Berkeley ; UC, Berkeley) ; Lou, Hou Keong (LBL, Berkeley ; UC, Berkeley) ; Melia, Tom (Tokyo U., IPMU ; LBL, Berkeley ; UC, Berkeley)
In these proceedings we use recent LHC heavy-ion data to set a limit on axion-like particles coupling to electromagnetism with mass in the range 10-100 GeV. We recast ATLAS data as per the strategy proposed in 1607.06083, and find results in-line with the projections given there..

Exclusive hadronic $W$ decay: $W \to \pi \gamma$ and $W \to \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ / Melia, Tom (CERN)
In this talk I will present results which assess the possibility of the LHC observing the decays W→πγ and W→π+π+π− . No exclusive hadronic decay of a fundamental standard model boson has ever been observed before and, at the LHC, the huge QCD background and trigger challenges present serious difficulties in making such measurements. Merging WW and WW+jet with MINLO / Hamilton, Keith (University Coll. London) ; Melia, Tom (UC, Berkeley (main) ; LBNL, Berkeley) ; Monni, Pier Francesco (Oxford U., Theor. Phys.) ; Re, Emanuele (Annecy, LAPTH) ; Zanderighi, Giulia (Oxford U., Theor. Phys. ; CERN)
We present a simulation program for the production of a pair of W bosons in association with a jet, that can be used in conjunction with general-purpose shower Monte Carlo generators, according to the POWHEG method. We have further adapted and implemented the MINLO' method on top of the NLO calculation underlying our WW+jet generator. [...]

Rare exclusive hadronic W decays in a $t\bar{t}$ environment / Mangano, Michelangelo (CERN) ; Melia, Tom (CERN)
The large cross section for t-tbar production at the LHC and at any future hadron collider provides a high-statistics and relatively clean environment for a study of W boson properties: after tagging on a leptonic decay of one of the Ws and the two b-jets, an additional W still remains in the event. We study the prospect of making the first exclusive hadronic decay of a fundamental boson of the standard model, using the decay modes W to pi gamma and W to pi pi pi, and other related decays. [...]

Getting more flavour out of one-flavour QCD / Melia, Tom (CERN)
We argue that no notion of flavour is necessary when performing amplitude calculations in perturbative QCD with massless quarks. We show this explicitly at tree-level, using a flavour recursion relation to obtain multi-flavoured QCD from one-flavour QCD. [...]

Dyck Words and Multi-Quark Primitive Amplitudes / Melia, Tom (CERN)
I study group theory (Kleiss-Kuijf) relations between purely multi-quark primitive amplitudes at tree level, and prove that they reduce the number of independent primitives to (n-2)!/(n/2)!, where n is the number of quarks plus antiquarks, in the case where quark lines have different flavours. I give an explicit example of an independent basis of primitives for any n which is of the form A(1,2,sigma), where sigma is a permutation based on a Dyck word..
