Status of the beam-based measurement of the skew-sextupolar component of the radio frequency field of a HL-LHC-type crab-cavity / Carlà, M (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Carlier, F (CERN) ; Calaga, R (CERN) ; Tomas, R (CERN) ; Kostoglou, S (CERN) ; Bartosik, H (CERN)
Two High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) type crab-cavities have been installed in the CERN SPS for testingpurposes. A first partially successful attempt to characterize the skew-sextupolar component of the radio frequency field of the crab-cavityby means of beam-based techniques has been carried out in 2018.The large orbit distortion produced by the crab cavity dipolar field combined with the multipolar errors in the SPS opticsresulted in some systematic errors that cannot be easily accounted for. Long term stability studies in the presence of crab cavities and high order multipoles in the CERN super proton synchrotron and high luminosity large hadron collider / Alekou, A (CERN ; Manchester U.) ; Appleby, R B (Manchester U.) ; Cruz-Alaniz, E (CERN ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Bartosik, H (CERN) ; Carlà, M (CERN) ; Kostoglou, S (CERN) ; Papaphilippou, Y (CERN)
In 2018 the world’s first Crab Cavity (CC) experiments with protons were successfully performed, aiming to study the CC effect on a proton beam and evaluate the engineering challenges. Before the commencement of these experiments, the impact of the CCs and their multipoles on the long term particle stability of the SPS was studied using dynamic aperture simulations. [...]

Understanding of the CERN-SPS Horizontal Instability with Multiple Bunches / Zannini, Carlo (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Carlà, Michele (CERN ; CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Carver, Lee (ESRF, Grenoble ; CERN) ; Li, Kevin (CERN) ; Métral, Elias (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Schenk, Michael (CERN)
At the end of 2018, an instability with multiple bunches has been consistently observed during high intensity studies at the CERN-SPS. This instability could be a significant limitation to achieve the bunch intensity expected after the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU). [...]

First demonstration of the use of crab cavities on hadron beams / Calaga, R (CERN) ; Alekou, A (Manchester U.) ; Antoniou, F (CERN) ; Appleby, R B (Manchester U.) ; Arnaudon, L (CERN) ; Artoos, K (CERN) ; Arduini, G (CERN) ; Baglin, V (CERN) ; Barriere, S (CERN) ; Bartosik, H (CERN) et al.
Many future particle colliders require beam crabbing to recover geometric luminosity loss from the nonzero crossing angle at the interaction point (IP). A first demonstration experiment of crabbing with hadron beams was successfully carried out with high energy protons. [...]

The beam coupling impedance represents one of the sources of potential beam instabilities in particle accelerators. The localization of large coupling impedance sources is therefore very important in order to focus the efforts for mitigation measures when these are needed. [...]

Reconfiguration of SPS Landau octupole circuits to minimise second order chromaticity / Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Carlà, Michele (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN)
In the SPS Q20 optics presently used for LHC beams, the Landau octupole families of the SPS (LOF and LOD circuits) generate large second order chromaticity due to the relatively high dispersion at their locations. Since the induced second order chromaticity results in enhanced losses due to the large incoherent tune spread, these octupoles cannot be used for mitigating transverse instabilities for LHC beams. The LHC Upgrade, called High Luminosity LHC, aims to increase the integrated luminosity by a factor of 10. To achieve this, the project relies on a number of key innovative technologies, including the use of superconducting Crab Cavities with ultra-precise phase control for beam rotation. [...]

First machine development results with HL-LHC crab cavities in the SPS / Carver, Lee (U. Liverpool (main)) ; Alekou, Androula (U. Manchester (main)) ; Antoniou, Fanouria (CERN) ; Appleby, Robert (U. Crab cavities are a critical component within the High Luminosity upgrade project for the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). It is foreseen to use crab cavities in order to compensate the geometric luminosity reduction factor (reduction of the luminous region at the Interaction Point [IP]) due to the beam crossing angle (required for minimizing the impact of the long range beam-beam effects on the single particle beam dynamics) and increase the number of collisions per bunch crossing. Two High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) type crab-cavities have been installed in the CERN SPS for testing purposes. An attempt to characterize the skew-sextupolar component of the radio frequency field of the crab-cavity ($a_3$) has been carried out by means of beam-based techniques using turn-by-turn monitoring of the betatron motion. Transverse beam dynamics studies with high intensity LHC beams in the SPS / Carlà, Michele (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Beck, Mario (CERN) ; Carver, Lee (CERN ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Kotzian, Gerd (CERN) ; Li, Kevin (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN)
In order to reach the target beam parameters of the LHC injectors upgrade (LIU), about twice the presently operational intensity of LHC type beams has to be achieved. Although the planned upgrade of the main RF system will occur during the long shutdown, a series of measurements have been performed to assess the beam dynamics challenges with these very high intensity beams on the long SPS injection plateau.
