Abstract The authors have measured the inclusive pion spectra produced at 0 degrees by 86 MeV/nucleon /sup 12/C ions on several nuclear targets (/sup 6/Li, /sup 12/C, /sup 27/Al, Cd and Pb). The experiment was performed by using the intense (>10/sup 11/ ions/second) beam from the CERN Synchro-cyclotron. The pion momenta were measured by means of a large solid angle magnetic spectrometer (Omicron). The momentum resolution was 2% fwhm. The measurements cover the range of pion momenta from 150 to 300 MeV/c and up to a sensitivity limit on the double differential cross sections of 10/sup -36/ cm/sup 2//(sr. (MeV /c)). The data are corrected for all the experimental uncertainties, including muon counting.
