Abstract | In ALICE, the beam will cross the whole set up. This is for the muon arm spectrometer, an important change regard to the existing ones like NA50 where the beam is stopped by a high density dump. The secondary particles (essentially pions) produced at the vertex and at small angles will interact with the beam pipe and then become an important source of background. Such a noise has to be minimized to allow a good working of the muon chambers. Without shielding the beam pipe the simulations show a too high particle density on these chambers. We have to optimize the shape and the materials of this shielding and for this purpose we use simulations. The goal of this test experiment is to compare the datas with the predictions. The transversal dimension of the shielding cannot be increased too much if we want to achieve a good measurement of the muons above 2¡. Monte Carlo simulations agree rather well with longitudinal punchthrough measurements but for lateral background there are less datas and comparisons. This experiment has been done to study the lateral background and get a normalization for the simulations. From the datas we will be able using the models to extrapolate for a Pb-Pb event in ALICE. As pions are the main source of secondaries we have used such a beam in the West Hall X 5 area. |
