Abstract | Pixellated hybrid photon detectors (HPDs) have been used to image rings of Cherenkov light in a prototype of the LHCb RICH. This article outlines the detector and reports on the performance of the HPDs and their electronics. The detection of rings from aerogel, air and C/sub 4/F/sub 10/ radiators is described. The Cherenkov angle resolution of the prototype and the effect of ionising particles traversing the HPD is also reported. (8 refs). |
