Second Reference Dictionary of the Nomenclature of Celestial Objects.
LORTET M.-C.; BORDE S.; OCHSENBEIN F.
Abstract (from CDS): This is the notice accompanying the electronic versions of the 2nd edition of the Dictionary of the Nomenclature of Celestial Objects (hereafter Second Dictionary) which updates the first edition (Fernandez et al. 1983) and its Supplements (Lortet & Spite 1986; Borde & Lortet 1990b). The complete paper reference version (about 500 pages) can be obtained via ftp://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/pub/dic2 as explained in Sect. 3; a guide for trying out the "On-line" version of the Dictionary is given in Sect. 4. Readers are urged to try it! (one can always refer back to Sect. 2 as the need arises). The first section summarizes the general problems related to the nomenclature, how they are faced by the International Astronomical Union (especially the Working Group Designations of Commission 5), the role of the Dictionary and how each astronomer is involved and may contribute. In the second section, we describe the paper version, with a few illustrations made of excerpts from the main tables (acronyms, comprehensive lists, references, author index) and of a few of the auxiliary tables, including examples of ambiguous or commonly used designations. Sections 3 and 4 guide the reader through the various computer versions of the Dictionary currently available or which can be requested: a kit of different consistent sets of data available through ftp; on-line accesses http://astro.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/Dic; information about updating. Comments, pieces of information, inquiries and criticisms are welcome to any of the authors.
