Coachman ran as a Republican for lieutenant governor of North Dakota on a joint ticket with lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Paul Sorum (R) in 2016.[3] The two were defeated in the primary election.

Coachman was the running mate of gubernatorial candidate Paul Sorum.[4] The general election took place on November 6, 2012. In the general election in November, they faced Republican incumbents Jack Dalrymple & Drew Wrigley, Ryan Taylor & Ellen Chaffee (D) and Roland Riemers & Anthony Johns (independent nomination).[5] They were defeated by incumbents Dalrymple and Wrigley.[5]

Interview with the North Dakota Monitor

Coachman highlighted the following themes in an interview with the North Dakota Monitor on July 29, 2024.[1]

'As Governor I will change the focus of North Dakota’s political objectives by becoming a state focused on restoring individual liberties in all aspects of life, family and business for the citizens of North Dakota,' Coachman said in a February statement announcing his candidacy.

A list of his plans for office featured in the announcement included:

  • Repealing two or three laws for every law signed, and preventing any new legislation from being longer than three pages.
  • Banning residents of foreign countries from owning land in North Dakota.
  • Replacing property and state income tax with one 'flat' tax.[6]
