Product Description

Directed with clinical precision by Academy Award® winner Robert Wise, The Andromeda Strain is a compelling account of the earth's first biological crisis. After an errant satellite crashes to earth near a remote New Mexico village, the recovery team discovers that everyone in the town are victims of a horrible death, with the mysterious exception of an infant and an old homeless man. The survivors are brought to a state-of-the-art underground laboratory, where the puzzled scientists race against time to determine the nature of the deadly alien virus before it wreaks worldwide havoc. A trailblazer in the areas of special effects and inventive sets, The Andromeda Strain is based on Michael Crichton's best-selling novel that created national paranoia for its topical relevance to the first moon landing and is perhaps the most chillingly realistic science fiction thriller ever made.

A great movie that looks great in HD
The Andromeda Strain is one of my favorite movies and this review is about the Blu-Ray version released in July, 2015. The movie is about the landing of a specimen return probe sent into space to collect extra-terrestrial samples of life. The mission of collecting a alien life form was successful, but the sample return capsule inadvertently comes down near the small town of Peadmont, NM. The townspeople find the probe and unwisely decide to open it. The extremely dangerous organism within is released and it promptly kills almost everyone in the town. It organism then threatens to spread and destroy the rest of the planet. The subsequent four days in the movie are related to the retrieval of the probe and the assembly of a small group of specialized scientists at a secret, underground biological warfare lab in southern Nevada. Their job is to figure out what this new organism is, and how they can contain, characterize, control and destroy it before it destroys all the other life on planet. The movie is unlike almost all movies before or since due to its very realistic portrayal of scientific labs and quarantine procedures. The actors and actresses in the movie were not really well known even when the movie was released in 1971. This unfamiliarity aids the movie as the resulting characters are able to lend a very realistic and believable scientific quality to the movie. The scan quality of the Blu-Ray image is very good considering it’s a 45 year old movie. The presentation is in full HD at a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The non-effects related scenes in particular are very clear, colors and b/w gradations are excellent in general. The scan of the movie does not appear to have had any digital noise reduction done on it so there is some noise and dust speckle but these are mostly in the special effects related parts of the movie. This is to be expected for a 45 year old movie based on the effects technology they had at that time. I personally prefer no noise reduction with a little speckle as opposed to pasty face artifacts related to noise reduction.Like the DVD version, the Blu-Ray disc contains a interesting and informative 480p based, 30 minute featurette about the making of the movie as well as a 13 minute portrait of Michael Crichton and the history of how he came to create the book the movie was based on. I would highly recommend the purchase of this Blu-Ray movie as it’s a classic movie and it looks great in HD.

I've seen this movie years ago and really enjoyed it. I wanted to see it again. It was just as good the second time. This movie was ahead of its time. Good acting and cast. Good effects for the time it was made. Well worth your time to watch.

Chilling, stark, people in a small space dealing with an extinction level event. From a time when you made a movie, not a compilation of wizz-bang CGI for the sake of wizz/bang. This movie gave me nightmares. If you like this also find the un George Lucased original version of THX1138. That would be a great box set.

BOTTOM LINE: If you like more science in your sci-fi films then you should enjoy THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN. If you prefer spaceships, zapping rayguns and gloppy monsters terrorizing helpless maidens on distant planets then this movie ain't for you. I enjoyed watching this science-heavy drama again after many years and am extremely pleased with the high quality audio/video & bonus goodies on this Blu-ray release. 4 STARS

THE STORY (contains spoilers): A government satellite crashes back to Earth and the folks in Washington find themselves juggling one seriously hot potato when it's discovered that an unknown lifeform has hitched a ride back. In a tiny desert town near the crash site all but two residents (a crying infant & a drunk) are wiped out within hours; most dropping in their tracks, their blood literally turned to powder in their veins. What killed the townspeople and, just as importantly, how & why did the other two somehow survive?? Interesting sci-fi film has genuine moments of tension as high-level eggheads are whisked to a super-secret facility buried deep beneath the New Mexican desert and tasked with figuring out exactly what caused the bizarre deaths and IF it can be isolated and stopped before it breaks containment and threatens the rest of the world.

THOUGHTS: More of a fascination for fans of tech-loving lab procedurals than your traditional sci-fi outing. Lots of exposition and shots of folks in surgical garb poking & prodding things, looking gravely concerned. If this sort of thing interests you then ANDROMEDA STRAIN will be right up your alley. Almost the entire running time of the film focuses on just four actors, but thankfully they are all excellent in their roles. Arthur Hill, David Wayne, James Olson & Kate Reid are terrific as the quartet of supersmart science investigators sequestered in the underground research facility code-named WildFire. Their various struggles & interpersonal quarrels help keep ANDROMEDA STRAIN from being merely a 120 minute monotone pathology/science lecture, although not by much. Set designs are very cool and rather retro-futuristic. Amazingly enough, much of what must have seemed impossible or cutting edge back in 1971 is actually pretty commonplace technology now.

THE BLU-RAY: Good news for fans of this Robert Wise-directed nail-biter. THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN arrives on Blu-ray looking & sounding very, very nice. Picture & sound are excellent. Very little pixelation or artifacting that I could detect. Soundmix is level and solid. Bonus features include an interesting, well done new "Making of" featurette, along with another short piece looking back at the works & career of novelist Michael Crichton. A copy of the film's theatrical trailer is included as well.

Love the green monochrome computer monitors. Great microscope on early 70’s tech that holds up pretty well. Not the first potential pandemic story but must have inspired later ones.

I loved the book when it first came out and it led me to read most of Crichton's other books. I saw the movie in theater and was mesmerized by it. This cleaned up version is very well done. Special features are worth watching too. Seeing clips from the original film highlights how good a job they did restoring the movie.

This review is for the Blu-Ray edition of 'The Andromeda Strain' released by Universal Home Entertainment in 2015.

I'm going to keep this review to a minimum (for me) because this movie is very well known, much talked about over the years and very well reviewed. I don't have a lot to add to what has already been said on this one.

If you have never seen this film and you are among the younger crowd, it is still worth watching. The production values were excellent for the day and it mostly stands up today.

BLU-RAY: This film is shown in widescreen format with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I thought the picture looked excellent. I'm sure experts in photography could give you more details but to these 50+ year old eyes the picture looked almost like new.

EXTRA'S: You get some good extra's. There is a 'Making of' documentary called 'The Andromeda Strain: Making The Film'. There is also a 'Portrait of Michael Crichton'. You also get the theatrical trailer.

PLOT/SUMMARY: The movie opens with a government recovery team investigating a crashed satellite in New Mexico. Almost everyone has died. The only survivors are a baby and an older alcoholic man.

The survivors are brought to a secret underground facility to be studied. There are four scientists and they undergo extraordinary decontamination procedures before they are brought into the laboratory. The remainder of the movie focuses on their attempt to solve what was brought back by the satellite and what is causing it to kill almost everyone it comes into contact with.

PRODUCTION/COMMENTS: This movie was released by Universal in 1971.
-This movie had a large budget for the time period. It was made for $6.5 million. Ultimately it was a financial success.
-The movie was directed by Robert Wise. He is the director of some excellent Sci-Fi and horror films such as 'The Body Snatcher', 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' and 'The Haunting' among many others.
-The movie was based on the book of the same name by Michael Crichton, who would go on to much fame for the many movies based on his books.
-The female character of Ruth Leavitt was a male character in the book.
-This movie is notable for using many accurate scientific procedures.
-The fictional town in the movie was located and filmed in Texas.
-Micheal Crichton makes a cameo appearance in this film. He is in the background as a doctor. He was put in the background because of his height.

RECOMMENDATIONS: I'm giving this release 4 1/2 stars which I'm bumping up to 5. The only thing that it is lacking as far as I'm concerned is an audio commentary. The picture is excellent and you get some pretty good extra's.

Recommended for all fans of science fiction films.

A fantastic reproduction to BluRay of the original pandemic movie.
To appreciate it you’ll need to be comfortable with a somewhat flawed future aesthetic and more than a few improbabilities, but it’s great watching.
