- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2017I just received this, 7 May 2017, to replace my aging Breville SK500XL Ikon Cordless 1.7-Liter Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle. This new Kitchen Gizmo costs quite a bit less, but is better in my view. It has a one piece metal interior, rather than two pieces (sides and bottom) like the Breville or many other such kettles. Also the one piece interior is separate from the exterior metal wall. I am also more fond of the looks (the burgundy red unit) of this new Kitchen Gizmo, over the stainless steel exterior of the Breville.
The two units are, at heart, quite similar. The differences I've noted so far between them:
1) Choice of exterior colors (blue, burgundy, or gray) on the Kitchen Gizmo.
2) Single piece shaped metal interior, with no seam at the bottom interior, of the Kitchen Gizmo (one less way for leaks to form).
3) Nicer, bigger, on-switch paddle (below the handle) on the Kitchen Gizmo.
4) The added "stay warm" feature on the Kitchen Gizmo (whatever that is; I doubt I'll use it). P.S. -- the consumer box says this "Keep Warm option" "Keeps warm at 167 Farenheit (within 5% accuracy)" that "Stays warm as long as the function is on."
5) More discrete overflow on the Kitchen Gizmo (just a discrete hole at the top of the interior, right below the top hinge, is visible) rather than a visible interior vertical tube inside the main boiling chamber of the Breville.)
6) Much simpler "filter" (just some round holes in the interior metal, behind the spout), rather than the plastic and wire mesh device on the Breville.
7) Equally simple spout, formed by simply shaping the exterior metal, with no seams or added parts. Neither the "filter" nor the spout will ever break, unless you attack them with metal working tools or run over them with a truck.
8) No multi-piece plastic viewing window on the Kitchen Gizmo (that was what started breaking down on my Breville, prompting me to get a new kettle).
9) Minor cost reduced assembly of bottom electrics and heating element, using just three screws to hold on the kettle's bottom plastic cover instead of the six screws on the Breville (makes no difference to me, should work just as well, and probably saves Kitchen Gizmo a couple cents per unit).
10) Much lower cost - $30 for the Kitchen Gizmo instead of $80 for the Breville.
11) Very similar in weight, feel, quality of construction, and design, excepted as noted here.
Two caveats:
1) Don't open the lid when it has hot water inside. A little of the hot water inside will be hanging from the inside, underneath, of the lid, and if the lid is raised, that will run down, perhaps to the outside top of the handle where your hand is, and perhaps to the discrete vent hole opposite the pouring spot, and in the later case, end up coming out the bottom of the kettle onto the stand or counter or wherever you set the kettle down next. Just pour out the hot water wherever it's destined to go, and then while still holding the kettle handle up, spout down, pop the lid open with the nice thumb latch on the handle, and shake or dribble the remaining water (including the little bit clinging to the lid underside) into the sink. Then close the lid and return it to its stand, awaiting the next time.
2) Second caveat: some other reviewers are reporting rust issues. I've not had mine long enough to know. If I see rust soon, I'll try to come back here and update this review (remove some stars) and look for a return. I tend to have a "titanium thumb" for mechanical devices (they usually work for me), so I'll be surprised if that's a problem. We'll see. If I don't update this post, that's a good sign. (P.S. - over three months later, zero sign of rust so far.)
So ... unless the Kitchen Gizmo rusts on me, I cannot imagine preferring the Breville (unless the fancier plastic, breakable, filter and viewing window features were worth an extra $50, which they totally are not - I'd pay -not- to have those two features.)
The Breville could also get hot water down its overflow tube, out the kettle bottom, and onto my kitchen counter, though I didn't figure why my Breville sometimes seemed to "leak" water onto its base just after I had finished used it, until today, as I was retiring it from several years of good use.
P.S. -- Shortly after posting this, I noticed another kettle that is almost identical (likely made on the same manufacturing line): the various Secura kettles, such as the Secura 1.8 Quart Stainless Steel Electric Water Kettle Double Wall Cool Touch Exterior (Red). Both this Kitchen Gizmo and the Secura kettles use what they call a "Strix Controller", both use 1500 watt's of power, and both hold 1.8 quarts. Close up photos of the construction of the Secura's spout and other details show what appears to be identical to what's on my Kitchen Gizmo.
P.P.S. -- I removed the plastic base cover (two Philips screws and one TriPoint Y00 screw, an unusual screw that few will have a driver bit for) and inside found what appeared to be decent quality consumer electrical wiring, switches and such, with several little plastic and metal pieces custom designed for these sorts of kettles. All well and good and as I expected.
P.P.P.S. -- I recommend NOT boiling mineral rich drinking water in this, or other similar such, kettles. The minor problem is that this creates more mineral deposits inside, which have to be cleaned out. The major problem is that mineral rich water bubbles when boiled, causing the water to go up into the overflow tube (or in the case of this kettle, into the discrete vent hole), down into the electrical parts hidden in the bottom. This makes a puddle of water on the counter, and strikes me as a potential electrical hazard. I recommend instead boiling rather flat "boring" tap water, or something well filtered, such as distilled or reverse osmosis water, if you have that available.
P.P.P.P.S. -- Over two and a half years later - ** still going strong **. Oh - one _can_ open the lid just after boiling water in it. Just be sure to tilt the kettle so that the lid remains relatively flat, rather than holding the kettle upright with the lid tilting upward which would let the accumulated steamy hot water on the lid's underside flow down on to one's gripping hand on the handle. There's no actual need to open the lid just after boiling water, except if one wants to look inside to double check that your pre-coffee early morning brain forgot the water or something similarly stupid.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2016I've just received this kettle yesterday. It's good enough, and it's not hot outside (that's what I was looking for). But one of the reasons to buy this kettle was its' nice and unusual color (something like bordo). In reality the color looks plain and has more of brown. Also, from the picture I had an impression that the surface is half-matte, but in reality it is not, it's just usual plastic. You can see color and surface type on the photo.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2017I don't think this boils water all that fast. The keep warm button is a nice feature. This is ok as a basic kettle but it's not better than lower cost options out there. I got this because in the Q&A someone said this is made in Taiwan. No. It's made in China.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2017Review Update on Vendor's Service: 5☆. I wrote in to the vendor regarding the issue, their reply was prompt (within 24hrs), concerned and polite. As I mentioned, this could be the perfect kettle, hope vendor will be able to solve the problem. Thanks for resolving this issue.
Original Review: 2☆ Only on Product- Rust!
I was so excited to receive the kettle that i started using it the next day! It ticked all my boxes in a kettle and it arrived in a great packaging!
The bottom of my kettle is starting to rust about a week ago. I'm disappointed, everything worked fine it was almost the perfect kettle. Maybe they are using a thin coating of stainless or the lower quality stainless steel. If it's high quality or surgical stainless it wouldn't rust.
I never thought my kettle would rust :(
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2018After one month with it, I can say I am very satisfied with this. Works the way it's supposed to, nice design. I spent a good amount of time researching for what would be the best bang for your buck, and I'm happy to have picked this model. Don't be stupid and think that it rusts with use. It builds up deposit if you boil hard water on it. IT'S STAINLESS STEEL.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2018So far this has exceeded my expectations. All I was looking for initially was a stainless steel electric kettle with a wide lid opening (that I could stick my hand in) for easy cleaning, at reasonable price. I've been searching for months and either the opening was too narrow, the reviews were horrible, or the price was ridiculous, because of additional functions I didn't want.
I saw this at $24.99, and thought with the keep warm function, it's a real bargain. I've found that another nice bonus of the double wall steel is that it stays hot for a couple hours, even without the keep warm function turned on. Now that I've been using it constantly for 5days in freezing weather, think I can say I'm very happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone looking for an electric kettle.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2017good looking. However some design defectd on the lid.
1. the stream run out through around the edge of lid
2. the heated water fall down along the lid when open the lid.
